Koka Instant Rice Noodles, Chicken Pho Flavour, 70g Price: $3.50 for a pack of four Where: NTUC FairPrice supermarkets Slurp factor: This instant version of the popular Vietnamese noodle dish features silky and smooth rice noodles. But they tend to clump together after a while, so eat fast. The MSG-free soup stock had a light, clean taste. Great toppings of fried shallots, red chillies and coriander.

Don't overcook the thin noodles or they go mushy. If you like tangy citrus flavours, you'll love the fiery chilli and searingly tart lime seasonings.

Nissin Chu Qian Yi Ding Spicy Sesame Flavour, 85g Price: $1.95 for a pack of five Where: NTUC FairPrice supermarkets Slurp factor: The original instant noodle manufacturer still gets it right. The noodles have lots of bite and the sesame- oil flavoured broth is not too salty.

Marutai Tomato Sauce Saraudon, 200g Price: $5.90 Where: Meidi-Ya Supermarket, B1 Liang Court (tel: 6339-1111) Slurp factor:Crispy noodles Japanese style. And the noodles come fried to perfection. Just mix the tomato seasoning with water and add to a stirfry of onions, red bell peppers and baby corn. When it thickens up, simply ladle over the noodles. The crisp noodles are absolutely greaseless, a perfect foil for the sweet-sour tomato sauce.

Indofood Taste of Asia Salted Fish Flavour Fried Noodles, 120g Price: $0.75 a packet Where: NTUC FairPrice supermarkets Slurp factor: My favourite of the lot. The noodles come out really aromatic from the soy, sesame oil, onion and chilli seasonings. Best part of this dish? The crispy bits of fried onion and salted fish that you sprinkle on top. and smooth rice noodles.

Sanyo Sapporo Ichiban Tonkatsu Ramen, 98g Price: $1.65 Where: Meidi-Ya Supermarket Slurp factor: The soup has that milky look of good ramen stock. A tad salty, but lots of good, porky flavour. Excellent noodles, thin and toothsome. I love the sesame-seed topping.

Nong Shim Kimchi Ramyun, 120g Price:$4.24 for a pack of five Where: NTUC FairPrice supermarkets Slurp factor: The supermarket aunties who recommended this were right. This one's a real winner with a spicy, slightly tart broth and noodles that are pleasantly chewy. The bits of crunchy kimchi add lots of texture.

Newtouch Asakusa Sauce Yakisoba, 137g Price: Price: $3.20 Where: Meidi-Ya Supermarket Slurp factor:Perfectly engineered boxed noodles. The little vents in the corner of the lid allow you to drain the noodles without making a mess. The seasoning tastes of Worcestershire sauce and tomatoes, very appetising. There are even little ginger-flavoured puffs and seaweed to sprinkle on top.

Oriental Kitchen Mi Goreng, 80g Price: Price: $0.95 a packet Where: Yen Investments Thai Supermarket, 02-64 Golden Mile Complex (tel: 6293-2780) Slurp factor: I was tempted to finish the whole thing. These noodles from Thailand cook up springy and went very well with the sweet soy, chilli powder and onion-flavoured seasonings. All it needed was a fried egg on top.
