Mighty melon

These whopping huge Hami melons give you a lot of bang for your buck.

Grown in Iran, they have very thin skins so the flesh to skin ratio works very much in your favour.

The melons, which look like a torpedo, are also heavy. Cut into them and you get sweet, crunchy flesh that's almost white - quite different from the very pale orange of Hami melons from Xinjiang, China.

I wish they were sweet all the way through though, but they're not. Basically, you get sweetness two-thirds of the way down towards the skin and then it's just crunchiness in the last third.

But at this price for a huge melon, who's complaining?

Iranian Hami melons, $6.90 each, from Cold Storage, Market Place and Shop N Save supermarkets.
