Flat mate

When the old standby of water crackers fails to jazz up your cheese platter, try these Italian flatbreads.

They're thicker than water crackers but are subtly flavoured with olive oil, olives or rosemary. I like their slightly doughy chewiness and compulsively finished an entire packet for breakfast once - plain, without any cheese or dips.

The olive oil one was good with some shards of Montgomery's Cheddar though, and the rosemary one works very well with dips. It is not too strongly flavoured with the herb, but the little whiffs of sweet rosemary keeps it from seeming too plain.

Anfosso Spianatella Ligure, $8 for a 140g  pack, from Da Paolo Gastronomia, B1-03/04 Great World City, tel: 6333-6351. Opening hours: 10am to 10pm daily.
