Spud surprise in 'chocolate chip'

Now this is one of those strange Japanese snacks that sound terrible but taste fantastic.

Royce', a chocolate brand from Hokkaido, has large, ruffled chips covered with chocolate, but Meiji does a cheaper and just as good version.

But instead of a flat chip, it uses potato sticks. The result is an excellent chocolate-to-chip ratio.

In fact, what you get at first crunch is chocolate. Then slowly, you begin to taste a mild saltiness and the potato flavour comes through.

It's easy to go through the entire cup in one sitting, so don't say I didn't warn you.

Meiji Chocolate & Potato chips, $3.20 for a 53g pack, from Meidi-Ya supermarket, B1 Liang Court, tel: 6339-1111. Opening hours: 10am to 10pm daily.
