Sakae Sushi is everywhere

Size
Thirty-three branches, including the newest one at Park Mall. Over 50 outlets in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and China.

History
The first outlet opened in 1997 at OUB Centre. Its parent company, Apex-Pal International, was listed on the Singapore Exchange in 2003.

Price
From $1.90 for a plate of salmon sushi to $23 for a premium sashimi platter.

Popular items
Salmon sushi, salmon sashimi, soft-shell crab, hana maki and chawanmushi.

Watch out for
A new outlet will be opened next month at Square 2, next to Novena Square. Sho-U, a mid- to high-end restaurant that offers modern Japanese cuisine, will also open next month at Central at Merchant Court Hotel. The company also plans to expand to the Middle East, Vietnam, the US and Russia.

Taste Test
Lunch at the Wheelock Place outlet was pleasant, with its expanded premises eradicating the long queue at the entrance. The place also feels more comfortable with the extra space.

The sushi (all at $1.90 a plate) came in big lumps of rice, which tasted slightly sweet. The slice of fish on the rice was generous enough for you to taste it.

The soft-shell crab was a letdown, however. It was not very crispy and tasted too salty.

The California maki was just so-so.

Rating: ** 1/2
