FEW people can say they are making a meal out of art, but fund manager Philip Hemnell and five of his friends will be doing just that.
The 46-year-old Briton is paying $2,000 for the six-course meal-cum-art work conceived by Singapore artist Heman Chong to raise funds for The Substation in Armenian Street.
Called Dinner Tomorrow (In The Year 2020), the meal is one of 100 artworks on Click For Art, an online auction on eBay for the arts centre.
It hopes to raise $75,000 for operational costs through this event, which ends at the end of the month.
The auction has so far raised $15,000 for The Substation.
Bids range from $10 for a shirt from the set of Singapore film Becoming Royston, to $18,000 for an Amanda Heng multimedia installation, I Remember, about Singaporeans' collective memories about World War II.
The Substation's co-artistic director Audrey Wong, 39, said: 'Everyone's doing gala dinners or art exhibitions. We thought we'd do something different and fresh.'
In Dinner Tomorrow, Chong poses six scenarios of the future and asks chefs to respond to these crises with a dish each.
Some of the situations involve a world without fish, or when countries stop importing food items from abroad.
The chefs creating the dishes include food blogger Aun Koh, who is behind the Chubby Hubby food blog, and restaurateur Beppe de Vito.
Their 'solutions' are under wraps until the meal, which will be held in a secret location on a date yet to be fixed.
Chong, 30, said the idea of a dinner was mooted by Koh, who roped him in to provide a conceptual edge to it.
Chong said: 'Now with so many environmental issues like global warming, I'm interested in finding out what could happen to the future of food.'
Mr Hemnell, the only bidder for the dinner, said that $2,000 was the market price for a meal for six prepared by such experts.
He added: 'And it will not be in such a convivial atmosphere, or half as interesting.'
To bid on Click For Art, go to substation.org and follow the link to eBay on the home page. The last auction ends on Nov 28.
