Healthier food fair in the heartlands

The health dangers of trans fats have been widely reported in the past year. Everyone knows that trans fats are bad for you, but do you know which are the foods you should avoid?

Unfortunately, Singaporeans seem clueless about their fat intake. A recent survey conducted by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) found that one third of Singaporeans do not know any foods which are high in saturated fat. In addition, six in 10 Singaporeans could not identify any foods that are high in trans fat.(» Fat facts)

Unsurprisingly, eight in 10 Singaporeans exceeded the daily recommended intake for saturated fat in 2004, according to the National Nutrition Survey 2004 (NNS 2004). The excess consumption of saturated fat by the average Singaporean over a year is equivalent to the amount of saturated fat found in 27 blocks of butter.

As part of its efforts to educate Singaporeans on healthier food choices, HPB is organising a Healthier Food Fair at Ang Mo Kio Hub this weekend, from Aug 31 - Sept 2.

The fair will showcase healthier food products by ten major food manufacturers which are lower in saturated fats and trans fats. These include Lam Soon's reduced saturated-fat oils; a healthier range of nuts from Tong Garden and Tai Sun; pastries and bread from Prima Deli Bakeries; Magnolia low-fat milk products; Moo ice cream sandwiches from Wall's; and a range of healthier snacks like Want Want crackers; Cocofun crisps; and Nissin biscuits.

Four eateries from HPB's Healthier Dining and Healthier Hawker programmes - Chen Fu Ji, Doc Green's, Delhi Indian Restaurant and Meiji Japanese Food Outlet at NTUC Foodfare (Ang Mo Kio Hub) - will also offer visitors a variety of nutritious and low-fat meals.

There is more to the fair than just sampling food - there will also be stage games which aim to drive home the healthy eating message. One can also sign up for the Healthier Food Trails which will take participants to supermarkets, hawker centres and restaurants in search of healthier food choices. Also available are Gourmet Tours which feature healthy yet delicious food at several participating restaurants.
