Once a novelty, ramen eateries are now found in almost every other shopping enclave. The latest kid on the block is Bishamon Sapporo Ramen which recently opened its first outlet in Great World City.
Unlike other ramen, the broth in Sapporo-style ramen can be either chicken- or pork-based, and often has miso added to it. At Bishamon Sapporo Ramen, the soup is brewed from both chicken and pork for eight hours, and has a lighter taste than your typical pork-based broths.
At a recent review session, I tried the Special Miso Ramen ($13.50) which came with a large helping of chashu (sliced meat) as well as a soft-boiled egg. I enjoyed the texture of the ramen, which was pleasantly chewy, and the thick soup base was flavourful enough. The generous cut of chashu was quite tender, but rather difficult to eat as it was so large. I am not a fan of soft-boiled eggs though, so I was not impressed with the runny texture of the egg yolk. However, those who love half-boiled eggs will probably find this a welcome change from the hard-boiled eggs at most other eateries.
Bishamon serves more than just ramen - it also has three Japanese curry dishes. I tried the Japanese Katsu Curry Rice ($12, right), which came in a big plate. I enjoyed the slices of thin and crispy katsu, though they may admittedly be a little too thin for those with big appetites.
The eatery's dessert menu is comprised entirely of parfaits. These ice-cream treats are available in two sizes - regular ($8.80) and mini ($3.80). If you are having this as dessert, I strongly recommend that you go for the mini option. However, if you are in dire need of a sugar fix and have had nothing to eat the whole day, the regular serving may be in order. I tried the Green Tea Parfait, which was very sweet and creamy - perfect for those in search of a sugar high.
Even though Bishamon only opened a few months ago, it is already drawing heavy crowds during lunch and dinner. It will be opening a new outlet at Raffles City soon, and is looking for a location for a third outlet. Ramen fans may wish to take note and give Bishamon a try if they happen to be in the area.
