Recess at Old School

THE appropriately named Recess is just a stone's throw from Bistro GAGA, and if you're looking for a place to wind down with a snack and a drink, this is a most pleasant option. It comprises a small white-tiled cafe - not much more than a counter with some seating, really - and a nicely shaded, more expansive al fresco area, on a wooden deck adjacent to an empty field.

Recess shares its indoor space with a florist and a furniture showroom - the owners got together when they agreed to take the site, which includes an upstairs events space, and decided to add an F&B component. 'The cafe was created because the space suited it, and what we serve is simple comfort food,' says Valen Chia, one of the three partners in the business. 'We decided on the space within a week, and got everything done within a month.'

Daily specials such as nasi goreng ($5.50) supplement the permanent menu, which features all-day canteen-style fare such as salads, pastas and sandwiches, plus finger food like samosas and sotong balls. It may not be a full-fledged restaurant, but Recess has what it takes if you're looking for somewhere simple and breezy to chill out.
