Cedele Depot

Organising a group dinner can be a nightmare because everyone has different food preferences: there are the vegetarians, the health-conscious ones, as well as those who cannot live without their daily dose of chocolate. Given these requirements, I have found Cedele Depot to be a suitable dining venue for a large group of people.

In my opinion, a good way to start off a meal is with a hearty bowl of soup. Cedele has recently created a range of gluten-free soups to cater to gluten-intolerant customers. My pick is the Moroccan Spiced Carrot soup. Thickened with pureed vegetables, this naturally sweet dish is also vegetarian and cream free. A soup combo ($7.50) comes with unlimited helpings of a variety of bread ranging from four-seed buttermilk bread to garlic ciabatta.

Of the many sandwiches available, my favourite is the Bacon, Mushroom Omelette sandwich ($7.80). Crispy bacon strips are served over a moist mushroom omelette. The addition of crunchy red peppers and chewy mushrooms gave the dish a mix of textures. However, I feel that the bacon strips are too greasy, and can hardly be touted as healthy food.

My vegetarian friend likes the Totally Veggie Grilled Tofu sandwich ($7). For this creation, a substantial slice of soy and chickpea patty is sandwiched between two thick slices of bread. The tofu is mashed up and added to a variety of vegetables and nuts before being grilled and topped with mustard. The texture resembles mashed potato, but is extra crunchy due to the nuts.

To end off the meal on a sweet note, I recommend Cedele's best-selling cake - the Carrot Walnut Cake. The moist carrot cake is finished with cream cheese frosting and a generous amount of California walnuts. I only wish the carrot cake is more spiced. I also like the Strawberry Balsamic cake. This nutritious treat is made with whole-wheat flour, slathered with flavourful strawberry preserves and topped with toasted pistachio cream cheese frosting. The light texture certainly left me craving for a second helping.

A friend who was hankering after a more tart experience preferred the Lemon Meringue Pie. This neat assembly of puff pastry, lemon curd, marshmallow creme and meringue topping is a mix of flavours. The lemon curd is sour enough to make one's tongue tingle. However, the sweet marshmallow creme and meringue topping reduce the sour factor to a kinder, acceptable range.

With outlets conveniently located all around Singapore, Cedele is the perfect pit stop for a healthy lunch or a quick pick-me-up on a sweltering afternoon.
