Sakura shrimp are in season now, so if all you've ever had is the dried variety sold in packets in Japanese supermarkets, this is a good time to sample it fresh.
The tiny shrimp, coloured pretty pink like the cherry blossoms they are named after, are fished in Surugda Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture twice a year, in spring and autumn.
Kuriya Dining Great World City is offering several dishes featuring the little crustaceans until April 30.
Sakura Shrimp Gunkan Sushi ($10 for two pieces), is a great way to sample the sweet shrimp.
But I have to admit, I've become very fond of the restaurant's Sakura Shrimp clustered tempura ($16, below), essentially light, crisp fritters dotted with lots of the shrimp.
