I WAS fuming mad when I had my first bite of the Samsui Ginger Chicken ($13.80 / $25.80) here.
"Why didn't anyone tell me about this gorgeous dish before?" I thought.
This signature fare at the quirky little Chinese diner was absolutely mind-blowing. I must have told my dinner mate about 100 times how much I liked it. But of course I didn't waste any more time and gobbled down more.
To savour it, take a lettuce wrap and fill it up with a ginger- dipped piece of tender chicken and thinly sliced cucumber. The fragrant pieces of steamed chicken are lightly sauced - it's rather like chicken rice chicken but not quite as greasy - and goes royally well with the ginger sauce.
It's a traditional recipe from Guangdong and the Samsui women used to specially prepare this dish during Chinese New Year celebrations.
Complete your meal with the freshly homemade Hometown Tofu ($8 / $16) and the fried sweet potato leaves with chilli ($7.50 / $10.80 / $15).
Like the menu, the decor and service at this affordable joint is fairly basic. Not a date place, but surely a yummy place.
Verdict: Simple dishes, simply divine.
