A SIX-COURSE set lunch for just under $14? I think I smell a bargain!
The Sakae Teppanyaki lunch set ($13.99) is a sweet deal that serves up portions of duck, salmon, assorted mushrooms, fried garlic rice & miso, chawanmushi and a tofu steak.
What's there not to like? This is seriously a value for money set lunch offer right in the heart of Orchard Road.
On the whole, the food was pretty decent. Just one minor complaint, though: The garlic fried rice was a little too dry and bland for me.
My favourite was the duck slices marinated in a sweet teppanyaki sauce. The cook did a great job with it ? the meat was still juicy on the inside even though some parts were (perfectly) crisply fried on the outside.
Brownie points must also be given for Sakae's original chawanmushi recipe. Usually steamed in unassuming dinner bowls, the dish here was steamed in a hollowed-out onion - on the teppanyaki hot plate.
It seemed like a lot of effort for a small dish, but the cook before me executed it seamlessly. The end product was delicious - soft, light and naturally fresh.
Other lunch sets includes the Beef Set and Seafood Set ($11.99-$13.99).
The set dinners are pricier ($17.99-$62.99) but that's because you get more variety.
Verdict: Decent teppanyaki fare at a fantastically affordable price.
