On The Nalanda Trail: Buddhism in India, China and Southeast Asia |
This exhibition looks at the pivotal role played by Nalanda in India - one of the world's first great universities - in the spread of Buddhism from India to China and Southeast Asia. Great monks such as Xuanzang made amazing journeys from China to India (on foot and animal only!) and the exhibition layout traces that journey with fantastic Buddhist art from China, Central Asia, India and Southeat Asia.
Highlights of the exhibition include a group of rare sutras and paintings from the famous grottoes of Dunhuang, located along the Silk Road. Also not to be missed are the very rare bone relics of Buddha - shown only with the special permission of the government of India.

Joshua Yang's drawings, a jumble of pencil on paper and ink on fabric, consist of a single, unbroken line woven into a mind-boggling myriad of shapes and figures. In this exhibition, he explores the notions of time, memory and experience further in a series of technical drawings of watches and clocks, done from memory and in a single stroke without any breaks or intersections in the line. |
