The lights of Christmas

Raffles City Ngee Ann City IMM

Giant wreaths framing a cascading shower of fairy lights set the stage for Raffles City's Christmas show, Barbie As The Island Princess. And looming over the junction of North Bridge Road and Bras Basah Road is the mall's Christmas tree decked with clusters of tinsel holly, tendrils of lush velvet and studded with red and gold baubles. Made up of 48,000 tips of pine and strewn with 12,000 fairly lights, the tree took 25 men and 200 man-hours to complete. How's that for Christmas trivia?

Christmas wouldn't be the same without a healthy dose of love, which is the theme at Takashimaya Department Store - Live, Laugh, Love 2007. The store boasts specially made Love Bears to add to the window, stage and store decorations. In black, silver and red, these special designs from Japan represent love and the feeling of home. Takashimaya Shopping Centre's iconic Christmas tree, decked out in rich maroon and gold, takes centrestage again this year in the front foyer.

Childhood fairy tales inspire IMM's Christmas decorations as the newly revamped mall dresses up as a castle in shades of purple and blue. Hit the taxi stand and you'll be greeted with magnificent threads of dazzling fairy lights, while inside, the mall's columns are delicately wrapped with blue lights. Meanwhile, festive banners and Christmas bells all add to the enchanted castle aura.

VivoCity The Paragon Square 2

If there were a "Tallest Christmas Tree In A Singapore Mall" contest, VivoCity would come out tops with its 30m tree planted at the mall's rooftop Sky Park.

A tree this big needs plenty of baubles, and in this case it's decked up with 600 pieces of ornaments. See lovely sculpted topiaries throughout the mall in shapes of snowmen, reindeer and angels. And if that's not enough to get you into the spirit of festive glitz, head for VivoCity's North Court to see the 5.5m tree decorated with nearly 14,000 Swarovski crystal beads and ornaments.

Its theme, A Whimsical Christmas, is decidedly old-world with Victorian, renaissance and neo-classical inspired ornaments in silver and gold. Regular Christmas mall-goers will recognise The Paragon's signature 12m high Christmas tree that will once again dazzle at the mall's entrance till Dec 30. Stroll through the atrium and you'll spot elegantly sculptured swags embellished with intricately designed ornaments and pearl strings. While the larger structures like the Christmas tree were constructed in Singapore, most of the glittering ornaments on display were specially imported.

Forget poinsettias and fir trees with fairy lights - Square 2 is celebrating a "contemporary" Christmas that eschews traditional red and green. Contemporary here leans towards the futuristic, with a stylised tree at the entrance sporting aluminium branches and metallic baubles. Inside, silver atomic baubles are interspersed with blue baubles that sprout from miniature trees. Indeed, the unique silver tree makes up the overall theme and extends to the pillars that flank the entrance, which are also decked with the same spacey tree effect.

AMK Hub Wisma Atria

The HDB heartlands are also infected with the Christmas spirit. At AMK Hub, expect A World Of Fun - this means Santa Claus, snowmen and reindeer, all in animated form, stopping shoppers in their tracks all across the mall. A 15m Christmas tree is perched above the mall's main entrance to put visitors in a festive mood. Those dreaming of a white Christmas can head for the mall on weekends to experience a faux snowfall.

The revamped mall is pushing its new identity as "the W" this festive season. Its theme: Winter In The City, with glistening crystal beads and white and blue motifs to suggest the lovely chill of winter. Even its snowflakes have gotten the W treatment - their crystal patterns are really a bunch of Ws grouped together.
