Muji is the place to go for tasteful, minimalist household products - and also some tasty cakes.

On an outing last week, I went wild in the food section and bought a bunch of snacks like black sesame baumkuhen ($2.90), orange baumkuhen ($2.30, left) and orange kouglof ($3.90, right).

The kouglof, a rich cake with a whiff of orange peel and liquor, is inspired by the European ring-shaped pastry, and the baumkuchen is the Japanese version of the European layer cake.

The orange baumkuhen has a zesty, fruity flavour, while the sesame baumkuhen is soft, subtly nutty and not too sweet.

But best of all is the Japanese plum cheese tart ($1.90). The small pieces of plum in the sweet, sour and salty tart are crunchy and I just love how the crust crumbles.

I hear from a friend that the store has even tastier offerings like fruit-flavoured Swiss rolls, which I did not see on the shelf last week.

More reason for me to revisit the store then.

Muji, 04-46 Paragon, tel: 6735-0123. Opening hours: 10am to 9.30pm daily.
